SERVICES
Estuary Ear Care is dedicated to enhancing access to high-quality hearing care in Topsham and the surrounding areas.
Our ears are very efficient at self-cleaning, however changes in the consistency of secretions from your ear canal, can cause harder earwax to be formed, which will have an effect on the normal wax migration process. Harder wax moves more slowly along the ear canal, making us more prone to a build-up, and this is where problems with our ears and hearing can often occur.
Estuary Ear Care in Partnership with Tympa Health, utilises the latest in micro- camera technology, allowing us to deliver a high standard of professional compassionate and holistic ear health care within the community.
EAR ASSESSMENT
Firstly, we will ask some medical questions, to understand whether there are any reasons why Microsuction might not be suitable for you.

With your consent, the clinician will proceed to examine your ears using an otoscope. If excess wax is present, Microsuction will be offered. In cases where no earwax removal is necessary, or if Microsuction is deemed unsuitable, we will provide ear care advice and guidance.
Our service enables us to capture high-resolution images that can be used to support any necessary referrals to your GP, with advise from Audiologists and ENT practitioners regarding further evaluation where necessary.

HEARING CHECK
The Hearing Check involves playing different sounds through ear-phones at multiple pitches and frequencies.
You will be prompted to press a button every time you hear a sound. This allows us to provide a validated, patient-led, and user-friendly hearing threshold, identifying any hearing weaknesses.
We can provide a digital record with Remote Review capability, allowing ear and hearing healthcare records to be securely stored, making it easy to share with specialists and make GP referrals when required, without compromising security.

MICROSUCTION
Microsuction is currently regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for ear wax removal. The process involves the gentle extraction of excess wax, using a fine medical suction device, ensuring precision and minimal discomfort. This is performed with the aid of a digital otoscope to enhance accuracy and visibility. Microsuction is considered the safest and most effective approach to ear wax removal.

While Microsuction can be noisy, Microsuction itself is generally painless, however some minor discomfort may occasionally be experienced when removing very hard impacted wax.

Sometimes if the wax is too deep or too impacted and hard, your clinician may need to arrange a second appointment for you

GENERAL INFORMATION

Our ear canals regularly secrete earwax from the sebaceous glands located in your outer ear. The movement of your neck and jaw, help move these secretions along the ear canal, picking up debris like dirt and dead skin along the way. Once combined, this is what forms earwax as we know it.

If there's a change in the consistency of secretions from your ear canal, this will naturally cause harder earwax to be formed. This is more common as we get older.

If you have impacted earwax, your hearing can sound a bit muffled in the affected ear. When a change in hearing is caused by a blockage, it’s known as conductive hearing loss. This usually resolves itself once the build-up of excess earwax is removed.

There are certain ear-related conditions that may prevent you from undergoing Microsuction. These include suffering from regular ear infections or having a perforated ear drum. If Microsuction is deemed unsuitable for any reason, your clinician will advise you appropriately on what options are available.
